Welcome to "Waters We Share" ...

…the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary is in great need of restoration. It is a complex ecological system in the midst of a thriving metropolitan center. Far more than just the port, the estuary includes rivers, wetlands, coastline, and open waters spanning over 1,600 square miles across New York and New Jersey.

Restoring the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary

An estuary is the area where the freshwater of the river meet the salt water tides of the sea. This combination of fresh and brackish waters creates rich and varied natural habitats that provide critical benefits to our environment. Estuaries are important to our ecosystem because they filter sediment, recycle nutrients, and provide habitat for fish and other wildlife.

Throughout history, the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary has been an urban center for development and commerce within our ever-expanding nation. Years of intensive use by humans has caused severe habitat loss and degradation, poor water quality, and sediment contamination. Public access to the estuary has become less available in many parts of the estuary too. As a result, the ecological integrity, health of the estuary, and societal values in the region have been impacted.  Considering the national and regional important of the harbor, it is time to restore this critical ecosystem so that it can continue to provide benefits for all.

When it comes to restoring the “Waters We Share,” The Comprehensive Restoration Plan was developed to provide the blueprint for restoration for the entire New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary. The Restoration Plan will support the estuary’s economic activities, provide jobs, and simultaneously provide the knowledge and resources it will take to restore its ecological integrity
